Tudor Coins Found

22nd March 2017

A hoard of Tudor coins has been found by a hobbyist metal detector near Ludlow. They have been dated to 1544–1561, with several coins from the reigns of both Mary I and Elizabeth I. A fragmented coin was also dated to the reign of their father, Henry VIII. It is guessed that the hoard was a purse containing nineteen silver shillings and groats from the late Tudor period.

The coins were declared treasure at an inquest, and Shropshire Museums have expressed interest in acquiring them. Hopefully this means they will go on display in the future. This is another wonderful find by an amateur metal detector. Only last month, I posted about a find of a Tudor clothing hook in Cornwall, which will be displayed at Helston Museum – another tiny treasure found after being buried for so long.
