A Tudor clothing hook unearthed by an amateur metal detector in Cornwall is going on display. It is estimated to date from the early 16th century, during the reign of Henry VIII. The silver hook is tiny – only 18mm by 15mm – but it is decorated with an elaborate filigree decoration with the remains of a gilt finish over the silver that suggests it belonged to a high-ranking individual. It would have been part of a set, similar to modern-day hooks and eyes, used instead of buttons to fasten a jacket. It is wonderful to see such remarkable items like this being found, especially one so tiny and easy to miss.
The hook was officially declared as treasure at an inquest and will be viewable at the Helston Museum, Cornwall.
