Katharine of Aragon Festival

29th January 2015

This is Katherine of Aragon’s final resting place. She was buried here on this day in 1536 in Peterborough Abbey, as the Dowager Princess of Wales rather than the former Queen of England. Her beloved daughter Mary was not allowed to attend the funeral. But many of her friends travelled through the snowy weather to pay their respects to the Spanish princess who was destined to be Queen of England from the age of four. Today her grave in what is now Peterborough Cathedral is marked ‘Katharine Queen of England’ and she is honoured in the yearly Katharine of Aragon Festival. This morning a service of Roman Catholic Mass was held in the Church of England cathedral in recognition of her faith. Tomorrow there will be a Service of Commemoration for her, attended by schoolchildren in Tudor costume, and there are a variety of other Tudor-themed events across the weekend. Have a look at the programme if you are nearby.
