Projects in Gambia
A Traditional Well
Cost: £400 or $700
The lowly well continues to be the most important part of our work in The Gambia. In the Western world, it is difficult to imagine life without water. These wells provide schools and womens’ groups with the opportunity to grow crops for food and to farm a harvest. Watch the video on Philippa’s YouTube Channel.
A Beehive
Cost: £200 or $325
What began as a trial in 2009 has quickly become a popular choice for donors. These simply constructed hives are populated by local bees and provide a harvest of honey that is a natural source of calories. Watch the video on Philippa’s YouTube Channel.
A Workshop
Cost: £1,000 or $1,600
At the heart of Gardens for The Gambia lies our commitment to helping communities become sustainable. One of the best ways to do this is to train local people in a trade which allows them secure an income. Projects have included a pottery workshop, which encouraged young people to learn the skills they needed to create pots and ornaments that they could sell at market, and a Batik workshop, which support women in the technique of tie and dye, creating beautiful fabrics that they could sell or use for their families.
A Borehole
Cost: Between £8,000 and £12,000 or $13,000 and $19,000
One of the biggest projects in The Gambia, a mechanical borehole allows us to bring running water into an area where the water table is not suitable for a hand dug well. This can transform an entire village, including its schools, homes and hospitals, which would otherwise have to rely on water brought in by hand. Its a big project, but if you would like to partner with us on such an exciting initiative, please let us know.
Seeds & Tools
Cost: various
For each of our projects, we provide a starter pack of seeds, tools and in some cases, fencing, to ensure that the local community have everything they need to make the most of their water.
We know that not everyone can afford to fund an entire project but smaller donations are most welcome.
