Dear Readers,

JeffreyI hope you will all be pleased to know that my fascination with all things feathered shows no sign of abating. Last week, we welcomed three new arrivals to the flock Zoe, Hannah and Jeffrey are Wyandotte Hens and amazingly beautiful. My daughter and son in law bought them for us as a thank-you for hosting their wedding which took place last summer. I delayed the arrival of their gift until the worst of the winter was over, I did not think it fair to a pair of elegant hens to be blown away. Victoria and Dez offered us hens and were surprised to find that they had to scour half of England to find these specific beauties. Their plumage is like black lace on white silk, unbelievably beautiful. To demonstrate my enthusiasm for them I have ordered them a deluxe hen palace and they settled in at once, to a fenced area in front of my kitchen window. They started to lay at the rate of two a day which would overwhelm us but for the fact that they are bantams and each egg is a delicate little mouthful. At the moment supply and demand are equally matched, and there are few joys greater than opening the nesting box and finding breakfast. This won't go on forever, I have hopes of setting one of the hens to breed and raising a family of little chicks. Meanwhile two ducks are nesting in the windowboxes beside the house - a perilous and unsuitable site, and I have just bought an incubator in case they give up altogether and I have to rescue the eggs.

Her reputation in marriages of marrying one man by arrangement, and then another to irritate Elizabeth, and then finally the third who was her second husband's murderer seemed to add up to a woman whose judgement was disastarous.

Fact and Fiction

I am often asked about the relationship between my historical research and the fiction of my novels, and with the renewed success of my novel The Other Boleyn Girl and the film which is based on the novel, more and more people are curious as to where fact ends and fiction and film making begins.

As all good literary newsletters should start - let me introduce my duckling. This is Charlie, so named in case he proves to be a boy or a girl who is the sole survivor from a nest which his mother fecklessly put in a very high windowbox. I had hoped to scoop up the nestlings the moment they hatched but they were too suicidally quick for me, and only Charlie survived.
